Big Dog | December 21st, 2009

havaneseGetting a Havenese is welcoming a very friendly and affectionate member into the family. They are known to form very strong and close bonds and are an intelligent dog that is easily trained. As the breed standard states, the Havanese has a sturdy and small frame with a coat that is long, silky and can come in several solid colors. They have a sweet expression with their dark eyes and have high set ears that hang. What makes them adorable is their disheveled look. This along with other pertinent facts will assist one in determining a good breeder when looking for a Havanese. The breed should mirror the standard for it to be of purebred quality. So with this knowledge, here are other tips when sorting through all the breeders:

Substandard breeders will always:

  • Claim that the dog is of perfect health without certficates
  • Try to make the sale go fast with little questions as possible
  • Not be able to provide champion bloodline verifiable proof
  • Cover up obvious flaws in the dog

Quality breeds that follow the standard always will:

  • Maintain the dog’s temperament of being very sociable, loving, curious and attentive
  • Give you proof of a clean bill of health
  • Provide you the proper instructions of how to take care of the dog
  • Make sure vaccinations have been done

It is always good to read up on the breed standard as that is the quality guideline. This will definitely help one when inspecting the canine for flaws. However, problems may come up that prove to be an obstacle… like if inquiries and transactions are only by phone or if the breeder is not in the area, then there may be a risk of being taken for a ride. 2. I own European dogs from a reputable breeder in the Netherlands. Not everyone is as lucky as I am. I have heard horror stories about dogs coming from behind the iron curtain countries of Europe. Mostly no health testing was done on the sires and dams and bad record keeping in their Stud Books. Some of these dogs are not even pure Havanese. People in the poorer countries of Europe are like our poor people in America. They raise and sell puppies for the money. It is a commodity to them and they are poor and hungry and their sires and dams are breeding machines making money for them. They often send whole litters to America and expect rich Americans to purchase them because we have a big heart and will help out regardless of quality of the dog. You can get a lot of puppies in one crate and ship them for 11 hours on the plane. If one dies no big deal, they have lots more where that came from. This is the same as purchasing a puppy from one of our Puppy Mills so beware. They can phoney up health certificates and pedigrees and other documents easy enough too because you don’t know the difference. The Minimum health testing on the sires and dams for the Havanese breed in Europe is Eyes Cerf’d for Cataracts & PRA and Patellas checked for knee cap slippage. In America we do more health tests. A good European Breeder will have the logo of their Country’s Havanese Club on their website and will be a member in good standing following their Club’s breeding rules and guidelines. Also you don’t need an agent to purchase a European dog. Agents are puppy brokers and bad news. They perpetuate the puppy mills in Europe. It’s TRUE so beware. You will get what you pay for and then keep paying your veterinarian later on.
