I own European dogs from a reputable breeder in the Netherlands. Not everyone is as lucky as I am. I have heard horror stories about dogs coming from behind the iron curtain countries of Europe. Mostly no health testing was done on the sires and dams and bad record keeping in their Stud Books. Some of these dogs are not even pure Havanese. People in the poorer countries of Europe are like our poor people in America. They raise and sell puppies for the money. It is a commodity to them and they are poor and hungry and their sires and dams are breeding machines making money for them. They often send whole litters to America and expect rich Americans to purchase them because we have a big heart and will help out regardless of quality of the dog. You can get a lot of puppies in one crate and ship them for 11 hours on the plane. If one dies no big deal, they have lots more where that came from. This is the same as purchasing a puppy from one of our Puppy Mills so beware. They can phoney up health certificates and pedigrees and other documents easy enough too because you don\'t know the difference. The Minimum health testing on the sires and dams for the Havanese breed in Europe is Eyes Cerf\'d for Cataracts & PRA and Patellas checked for knee cap slippage. In America we do more health tests. A good European Breeder will have the logo of their Country\'s Havanese Club on their website and will be a member in good standing following their Club\'s breeding rules and guidelines. Also you don\'t need an agent to purchase a European dog. Agents are puppy brokers and bad news. They perpetuate the puppy mills in Europe. It\'s TRUE so beware. You will get what you pay for and then keep paying your veterinarian later on.

Hi-
Thanks for including all this information n the Havanese breed, and especially the information on what to look for to identify substandard breeders and those that breed true to the line, which gives good guidance when you're trying to locate a quality breeder for any type of dog. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information, and I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future!

If you can\'t find something nice to say don\'t say anything at all. There is no reason for you to lash out at a puppy. Why don\'t you use your energy for actually helping out the shelter dogs instead of lashing out on the internet.

It sounds like a GREAT idea to adopt from a shelter. But ALL of them require me to fence in my yard, and want to interview my family a couple of times - oh and then have check up visits and...

Give me a break! These snooty people are the problem here and will end up seeing these poor dogs dead with their arrogance.

PS. Calling a Havanese a designer dog breed and stating that it sickens you pretty much tells me you should go work for one of those shelters who sounds good but doesn't place dogs. Or maybe you already do.

LOL what a great photo! Made me laugh! My husband and I just rescued another pug (now we have 3 pugs and a shih tzu) and this one is soooo snuggly and has no emotional problems. We are very surprised about this because he was a stray and the shelter that rescued him was about to euthanize him already. He fit right into our home and did not even have an "adjustment period". I hope people out there will continue to rescue animals as more and more people are giving them up due to the economic downturn.

Hi there, thank you for visiting our blog (http://blog.things4pups.com). There are so many dog breeds that I had never really known about the Havanese before! They are beautiful dogs. The fur reminds me a little of my Shih Tzu, so I bet they need constant grooming as well. Thank you for sharing!

Designer dog breeds are so sick to me... Every time someone buys a dog from a breeder, a dog at a shelter loses a chance at life. If someone MUST have a hypoallergenic dog, trying finding one from a rescue group- there are different rescue groups for all sorts of breeds, just Google it. But I maintain that when it\'s possible for you to adopt from a shelter - it it usually is - you should. Plus, mutts tend to have fewer inbred health issues, and they\'re just as cute as this little fake-lookin\' fella :)

We have a Havanese dog who is with us since she was separated from her Dam. She is kind of shy, so it is not only happening if the dog is a rescue dog. I always thought Havanese dogs are shy by nature.
